Why Shift to IT Project Management

Why Shift to IT Project Management?

by: Leoni Roxas

For over a year now, the world is facing economic instability due to pandemics. A lot of people lost their job. Some people’s jobs even became obsolete as the world adapts to the new norm. A lot of people started feeling lost and do not know where and how to begin. I know this is tough so I would like to suggest a profession that I hope people in this predicament would want to consider – IT Project Management.

And here is why:

1. It is an in-demand career.

With the pandemic, the whole world needs to adjust to the new norm. Businesses need to quickly transform before they get left behind. And this is where IT project Managers are needed. Project Managers are highly equipped to facilitate these transitions and provide immense value to businesses and organizations. There are estimates that show that there will be a 33% increase in demand for Project Managers by 2027!

2. It is a transferrable skill.

Project Management is a transferrable skill. Once you understand the Project Management standard, you can deliver product, services or outcome not just in IT but to any industry. You can even use it to put organization to your own personal life!

3. It won’t take too long for you to prepare for the shift.

I do not suggest making a quick shift to IT Project Management. There are certain trainings that you must equip yourself first before you do the transition, but it will not take you much time to get yourself ready. Please refer to my other blog post: “Non-Techie: How to Prepare for an IT Project Manager Role?

4. You do not need to be “technical”.

It would be good if you are already from the IT Industry. It would be best if you were an IT developer, QA or Engineer before you shift to IT Project Manager role. But I am telling you, it is NOT a must. I started with very minimal IT background and up to this point, I don’t have coding nor IT administration experience, but I was able to deliver mid to large scale app development and infrastructure projects successfully. I just followed the Project Management standard.

5. It’s a career progression.

This is your immediate chance to get yourself promoted or manage a team and step into Management role.

6. You will keep on learning.

There are no two identical projects even they both have the same exact scope and deliverables. There will always be something different and each time is an opportunity to learn. Also, doing different kinds of projects will expose you to different technologies and different kind of people and learn from it.

7. It pays well.

Project management is quite a lucrative profession. According to salaryexplorer.com: “A person working as a Project Manager in Singapore typically earns around 9,430 SGD per month. Salaries range from 4,710 SGD (lowest) to 14,600 SGD (highest).

8. You can easily adapt to the new default way of working – working from home.

During the pandemic, especially during times of lockdown, the default way of working is to work from home. As an IT Project Manager, I was easily able to adapt to this kind of working arrangement as mostly, this is already how we normally work if we deal with overseas clients and/or project resources located all over the globe.
